Art Appreciation Month

March 2025 was Art in our Schools Month. We celebrated and recognized the amazingly talented young artists within our Fillmore Unified School District community. They include the Fillmore High School student produced and directed play "Death is Weird," Fillmore Middle School students work on Cubism, and Fillmore High School student art submitted to the Ventura County Fair competition.

Girls 4x100 Team Break School Record

Please join the entire Fillmore Unified School District in congratulating our girls relay team: Mia, Kimberly, Janessa, and Karinna. Today at the Simi Valley Invitational, our Flashes Girls 4x100 relay team blazed to 1st place in the Girls Rated Division with a time of 50.50 seconds, not only winning the race, but shattering a 30-year school record set back in 1995. FUSD Celebrates World Down Syndrome Day

On Friday March 21, 2025 Fillmore Unified School District celebrated World Down Syndrome Day across all campuses. World Down Syndrome Day is a global awareness campaign officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The goal is to help people understand and support those with Down syndrome. The date being the 21st day of the 3rd month was chosen to represent the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. A special Thank You to Mason and Missy King and Vivi and Alisa Padilla who volunteered to read to classes!

Rio Vista Elementary Track & Field Grand Opening Ceremony

On Friday March 21, 2025 at 8:15 a.m., Fillmore Unified School District (FUSD) celebrated the grand opening of the new track and field at Rio Vista Elementary School.

The event was attended by FUSD governing board trustees Olivia Palacio and Scott Beylik, City of Fillmore Council Member, John Garnica, AYSO President, Arnold Munoz, Heritage Valley Blazers President, Jared Perez, Superintendent Schieferle and members of FUSD’s administration team.

Rio Vista Principal Beverly Garnica had the honor of cutting the ribbon and officially opening the new track and field. The new track is a 200 meter (approximately 656 foot) all-weather track with a soccer field in the middle. The track will also be used by students for activities during recess and Physical Education classes.

FUSD Superintendent Christine Schieferle said, “The new track and field project was funded by our Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) and is part of our ongoing commitment to upgrade facilities across our entire school district. I would like to thank our board of trustees, FUSD staff, and all partners involved for bringing this high-quality, state-of-the-art track and field to our students and our Fillmore-Piru community.”

Rio Vista Elementary Principal Beverly Garnica said, "Today we officially opened our new Rio Vista Track and Field by holding a special ribbon cutting ceremony. Our students LOVE the new field and we are looking forward to many years of enjoyment. Great things are happening at FUSD!"

Migrant Speech and Debate Tournament

On March 15, nine students from Fillmore Middle School and Fillmore High School participated in the Migrant Speech and Debate Tournament for Region 17. We are very proud of our students' effort and accomplishments. Our team brought home six trophies! Our first-place winner, Guadalupe Rocha, will move on to compete at the State level. Special thanks to Jonathan Gonzalez and Eriyana Linder for their outstanding work in preparing and coaching our students.

Sierra High, Heritage Valley, & Adult School Board Presentation by Principal Mendieta

Principal Blanca Mendieta presented an update on programs, activities, and initiatives at Sierra High, Heritage Valley Independent Studies, and Fillmore Adult School for the 2024-2025 school year. Science Teacher Mike Karayan was awarded Certificated Staff of the Year, and Campus Supervisor Annette Fox was awarded Classified Staff of the Year.

Great things are happening at Mountain Vista Elementary!

Mr. Corral, Fillmore Middle School Counselor, met with 5th grade students to choose their electives for the next school year. There are so many choices at Fillmore Middle School, Video Production, STEM and Robotics, Art, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and Percussion, AVID, ASB, and Drama.
